A little about Voda Communications
Voda Communications is an Adelaide-based company set up in 1999. From a team of two directors and a handful of clients, Voda Communications has exploded into a staff of 11 in less than two years, serving close to 300 clients. Voda Communications provides the business community with highly effective communication solutions.
Voda Communications has had apprentices and currently has trainees completing traineeship Certificate II in Data Communications via PEER VEET (Plumbing Electrical, Electronic and Refrigeration Vocation Educational Employment Training).
An opportunity to asses trainees and their fit with the organisation with a view to employment
"We get an opportunity to see if apprentices and trainees work the way we work (personality, ethos, and skills). We like a good job done. Traineeships and apprenticeships have given us the chance to see how they work. We get a chance to evaluate them. We have plenty of time to make a decision before we have to commit."
An opportunity to train trainees in the work ethic and practices that fit our goals
"We can train apprentices and trainees to have a work ethic and demonstrate work practices that fit our goals. Get them out of school - teach them how we work - get a bit of loyalty. Long term its easier to build people, bring through, train them, than find people at later stage."
It's easy through PEER VEET
"Definitely that is the only way I'll do it now - through PEER VEET. If they're not any good you ask PEER VEET to take them back. We don't have to worry about lateness etc. Sick days - don't pay them. It's PEER VEET's responsibility. We pay them only for the hours they're here. If they fail a test/exam PEER VEET sorts it out with them. They deal with issues of student/course uncertainty and they counsel them. PEER VEET manage all student counseling and re-sitting of exams. We just pay trainees when they are working here with us and if they don't perform we can choose not to have them back."
Our image and reputation is enhanced with customers
"We are committed to having trainees. We talk about trainees with our clients and they're impressed that we are investing in training. We show and tell our customers we invest in training because if people know you're invested in training they know you've got a long term goal. They are likely to do business with us if they can see we will be around to solve their problems. We are likely to be around longer than a company that's not investing in training."
Enhanced profits and makes the tradesperson's job easier
"On larger scale jobs it's more cost effective to have an apprentice. On a long-term job they can get up to speed - so it becomes more profitable. There is no extra cost of having an apprentice or trainees go out with the tradesperson (i.e. no extra van) because the apprentice/trainee goes out to work with an experienced person. There are tasks an apprentice/trainee can do and it's cheaper than having a tradesperson do it. It also makes the tradesperson's job easier."
Enhanced value for money for our customers
"We can offer more value for money to our customers because we charge apprentices / trainees out at a lower rate."
Enhanced repeat business
"We offer competitive pricing for our customers and this, plus the fact they know we are around for the long-haul because we invest in training, means we get repeat business. A number of clients stay with us - because we come up with solutions to their problems."
Benefits to the industry
"There are benefits to the whole industry when anyone trains a trainee/apprentice. In Data Communications there is a huge void between the very young and the very old workers - there are not many in the middle age range. In 10 years a lot of older ex-Telstra guys will retire and there will be a skills shortage in data/telecoms, so there is a benefit to the whole industry when anyone trains an apprentice/trainee."
