Elliot ShawTrainee at Voda Communications"I decided to work in the trade and talked to PEER VEET about it. PEER could see I had a good work ethic in the field and talked to me about what Data-Communications involved. They made me realise it was important to pass the exams. And now I only have to complete two more modules at trade school." "My parents are pleased that I'm working full-time. Dad is pleased that I got a chance to look at the industry before committing. I had a 1 month probation period where I could cancel my contract if I found out that this wasn't for me." How did you get into Data-Communications?"It was my dad who introduced me to the program via a school-based program - I then transferred to certificate 11 in Data-Communications." "All these kids (at a party I went to) want to get onto an apprenticeship and are asking me about it. Most search via the website. They're not sure where to go for information except the new apprenticeships site." What does a Data-Communications Trainee do at Voda Communications?"At first it was tying cables - a bit different to what I thought. I spent 2 months on placement somewhere else before I came here. At Voda Communications I was able to see the other side - I've done a fair few things: terminating cables; observed someone setting up phone systems with a computer; got familiar with fibre optics and using active equipment; working on telephone systems and the equipment on the end of the cable. When I came here, Wayne showed me how to terminate cables. Now I understand what to do: running of cables, cutting out face plates. Wayne (my supervisor) is a young guy so he relates to me." What has helped you to keep motivated during you traineeship?"I had my Dad. Having someone in the company/the industry as your mentor helps - they've gone through the industry." Graham Loose, Managing Director of Voda Communications explains that "Apprentices and trainees benefit from some sort of mentoring to encourage them to take a long-term view and look past the low wage in years 1 and 2. They need someone to encourage them. At 16, 17, you're still finding your way. You might think the grass is always greener. You need to look at the positives and you need a mentor (not your boss) to help you do this." « view all eProfiles |
